Abstract

The author emphasizes that, from the viewpoint of survival, it is crucial for individuals to have enough knowledge and at least college education. People with lower education are functionally illiterate. Information society namely depends primarily on the intellectual assets of the population. The segment of population with postsecondary education in developed countries is already more than 40%, while in Slovenia it hasn't even reached 25% yet. Obviously, the conventional school system can't meet all the needs for new knowledges; one of the solutions is correspondence education, especially at the post-secondary level. A new, democratic orientation is necessary, since life-long education can not be a privilege of the elite. Information society can not be solved by a handful of intellectuals.
