The author presents the importance of a self-concept for planning a personal career. She introduces the concept of career anchors. Actually, career anchors are deeply rooted self-concepts which significantly influence one's life and work. The career anchor can only be totally transparent when the individual acquires the first work experiences and feed-backs regarding her or his work. The model of career anchors is an useful tool in organisations to manage employees' careers more efficiently. But of course, every individual should learn to form and direct her or his own career. Therefore the author suggest the use of the career anchor model for institutions advising young people which profession to choose, for institutes of employment which help individuals find the first job, and for the unemployed who are searching for a new job.Metrics
