Author Guidelines

Articles normally vary in length from 8 to 30 one-sided pages (2500-9000 words). Articles may be submitted in Slovenian, English or German. Manuscripts must be double-spaced throughout, including notes and references.
Authors should use the system of footnotes with a separate bibliography specified by the guidelines given in the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010; for the first information, see the website http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html). Full details should be given in a footnote only at the first mention of a cited work. Please note that the footnotes and bibliographies follow slightly different rules.

Use “double” quotation marks, with ‘single’ ones within if needed. Italics are used only to indicate the titles of works or words borrowed from another language. Words or passages given especial emphasis by the author should be distinguished by the use of spaced type.
All submissions should be accompanied by:

  • a cover letter including submission title, author's name and contact info (email and
    postal address) and a brief biographical note on the author;
  • 3-5 keywords in English;
  • an abstract in English of not more than 50 words suitable for publication in RILM Abstract (see the website http://www.rilm.org/submissions/pdf/Abstracts.English.pdf);
  • a summary in English of not more than 500 words and
  • a list of bibliography and sources given at the end of the article (see the website http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html).

Fully notated music should be submitted in numbered examples; such examples should not be included within sentences in the text of a submission. In general, authors should avoid using musical notation within sentences when it is possible to do so. Musical examples and other figures may be submitted in electronic form (.tiff, .pdf or .mus format) or in photo-ready copy. Each example or figures must be submitted on a separate sheet of paper, and a caption should be provided for each one. Illustrations may be submitted as good quality (at least 300dpi), glossy photographs in either colour or black and white.

Articles for the open issues should be submitted no later than:
- November 30th for the first open issue of the following year,
- May 30 for the second open issue of the same year.
For the specific thematic issues, however, the themes are defined in advance, in cooperation with editors of individual issues.  

 

Guidelines for Reviewers

The international musicological journal Muzikološki zbornik/Musicological Annual is an academic outlet that publishes scholarly articles on music, with a particular focus on Slovenian and Central and East European areas of research, and title published by Slovenian scholars. The journal publishes up to six book reviews per year, which include three recent volumes published in Slovenia, and selected titles published in other languages (namely English and German). The commission and submission of book reviews are handled by the Reviews Editors of Muzikološki zbornik/Musicological Annual, Dr Danijela Špirić-Beard (reviews of international books) and Dr Tjaša Ribizel (reviews of Slovenian books). All book reviews are published bilingually (in Slovenian and English) and appear in two formats, the printed and the online versions of the journal. 

Guidelines

The book reviews are intended to provide a critical appraisal of the chosen volume, focusing on a reasoned critique and not merely a summary of the book. They should include an introductory overview paragraph (which summarises what the book/each chapter does), but the focus should be on selected key issues that the reviewer has decided to focus on. The aim of the review is for the reviewer to make an informed suggestion on whether the readers should invest their time (and financial resources) in the new volume.

The reviewers need to inform the readers about the following:

  • What is the purpose of the book, and do the authors deliver on this?
  • Who will find the book most useful (what is the targeted readership)?
  • Is the information/content accurate? Does the author(s) use the most appropriate/relevant available resources (i.e. is there some fundamental scholarship in another language that is not consulted)?
  • Does the book include any particularly interesting features, such as sketches, letters, graphs, pictures, etc.?
  • How doe the book relate to other literature in the field, and is there other/ more useful scholarship available (the reviewer should provide examples)?

The reviews should be approximately between two and three A4 pages, typed single spaced (c. 1.000–1.500 words). They should follow the MZ/MA guidelines (Chicago manual of style), including citation and selected bibliography where appropriate. The review should begin with a header that includes: The names of all authors/editors. The title. Parenthetical information about a series, if any. The place of the publication: The publisher, the year of publication. Pagination. The cost of the book in the given currency. ISBN.

For example:
Matjaž Barbo. Pomen v glasbi in glasba v pomenu. [Meaning in Music and Music in Meaning.] Razprave FF. Ljubljana: Znanstvena založba Filozofske fakultete, 2015. 138 pages. €14.90. ISBN: 9789612377748.

The reviews should include the reviewer’s full name, institutional affiliation and email contact. The reviews should be submitted in a word format document (the authors will receive PDF proofs of their contribution, after the typesetting is complete). The reviewers will write in one of the designated languages (Slovenian or English), and the translations into Slovenian/English will be provided by the journal.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  • The language in the submitted text is checked by a native speaker, preferably an expert in the field. The Musicological Annual does not cover the costs connected with language proof-reading of the submitted texts.

Author’s name will be evident in the article in journal. All decisions regarding layout and distribution of the work are in hands of the publisher.

In case of claims by third parties, authors commit their self to defend the interests of the publisher, and shall cover any potential costs.
