L.M. Škerjanc's First Symphony comes in order of their artistic merit clearly after his Fourth. By virtue of its underlying concept, concentration of the entire material, rich instrumentation, colourful means of expression, compact sound, clear and logical development of musical ideas, significance of melodies and its relation to the rest of the harmonic structure the First Symphony ranks among the top achievements in Škerjanc's orchestral music. Stylistically it may be designated as a late-Romantic piece of work, but in its orchestration it contains elements of impressionism, specifically of the impressionism cultivated by the ardent followers of the Schola cantorum of Paris. As regards form, the Symphony is indirectly determined by the classicist sonata form.Downloads
