A Contribution to the Question of the Centre-Oriented Thinking in West-European Music

Abstract

The issue concerning the centre-oriented thinking in West-European music is defined from two perspectives. First it is dealt with from the point of view of Western metaphysics, that is the concept of the circle with a centre. This circle, which corresponds directly with the system of music of ancient Greeks (the teleion system or the perfect system), transforms itself into a musical creation through musical structural awareness. It forms the history of that piece of music as a progressive outward development of the structure of the centre. Second, it is defined by means of the ancient Greek notion of ethos as the major factor involved in the transformation of Western metaphysical evolvement into music. The system of music (and later a piece of music) is thus part of a wider system which corresponds with the tendency of man to constantly seek a higher intellectual understanding, and vice versa, results in concepts of his existence.
