Abstract

Francesco Antonio Bonporti, an Italian priest and aristocratic music amateur composer, dedicated in 1703 the second edition of his Sonate da camera a tre, opus 2 to Prince-Bishop of Ljubljana, Ferdinand Count Kuenburg (holding this post between 1701 and 1711). During his time in the Carniolan capital Kuenburg was a noted promoter of Italian arts in his Diocese and Bonporti’s trio sonate, an instrumental genre suited to various uses from purely diversional and pedagogical to devotional. Trio sonate were especially popular among music circles of dilettante musicians-aristocrats. In Ljubljana at the time of Bonporti’s dedication they could well be performed by the members of the then flourishing music society the Academia philharmonicorum labacensium.
