Literary translation as a social and cultural commitment
The role of translators of Czech literature in Mexico

The aim of the article is to interpret the role of the translator in the genesis of translations of Czech literature published in Mexico. To date, thirteen titles of Czech literature have been published in Mexico, most of them thanks to the initiative of the individual translator. Applying the principles of translation archeology and based on the analysis of paratexts and interviews with contemporary translators, I explain the motive and purpose of these translations. Using different perspectives of sociological translation research, I focus on the role of the translator as a mediator between two cultures, who (un)intentionally assumes responsibility for the socio-cultural mediation between the source culture and the target culture. The sociological study of the creation of translations of Czech literature in Mexico allows us to reflect on the social and cultural responsibility of translators who are often initiators and directors of translation projects and mediators of literary and cultural communication between the Czech Republic and Mexico.
