This article aims to understand one of the facets of the reception of A Sibila in France through a comparison of the Portuguese original text and its French translation. More precisely, we shall try to understand how the feminine is portrayed in the two languages under analysis. To carry out our investigation, we will select some excerpts of the Augustinian novel in which the protagonist Quina is described physically and/or psychologically, evaluating in which way(s) the French language has transported the characterization of this fictional figure to its own reality. It should be remembered that languages carry historical meanings and traumas, and the French language did not suffer, in the 20th century, the restriction to which the European variant of Portuguese was subjected during the Salazar dictatorship – the period in which Agustina wrote this masterpiece. Moreover, the French language, extremely attentive to certain social struggles and a vehicle of multiple claims, had already seen the publication of the book Le Deuxième Sexe de Beauvoir (1949) when A Sibila was made known in Portugal (1954). Therefore, throughout our work we will focus on the linguistic and cultural peculiarities of the two languages, evaluating the explicit and implicit meanings that are conveyed in both of them concerning the representation of the feminine.
