Elegante hombre de mundo, Juan Valera fue el escritor del XIX que más desborda los límites impuestos por su tiempo histórico.
Su vida atravesaba en la época difíciles circunstancias: las complejas relaciones familiares y problemas económicos, así como el desvío de la política activa lo llevaron a retirarse temporalmente a Cabra y a Doña Mencía. Precisamente esa separación de la política activa se resolvería en una magnífica etapa creativa, y el escritor escribiría su obra maestra en medio de un conflictivo panorama español. El mismo Valera confiesa en 18861: «Yo la escribí cuando todo en España estaba movido y fuera de su asiento por una revolución radical […] cuando más brava ardía la lucha entre los antiguos y los nuevos ideales» (281). Efectivamente, son las novelas amables que escribe las que le ayudarán a evadirse de ese mundo problemático.
