El linaje, como eje de la problemática social que envuelve La Celestina, parece arti- cular el texto desde su principio mismo. No hay que esperar siquiera a que se abra el telón1 ni que los personajes tomen la palabra para reconocer las ambigüedades y contradicciones que se presentan en torno a los linajes de Melibea y Calisto. Ya en el «Argumento gene- ral»2, que a modo de sinopsis expone lo que va a suceder en la obra, se dice lo siguiente:
Calisto de noble linaje, de claro ingenio, de gentil disposición, de linda crianza, dotado de muchas gracias, de estado mediano. Fue preso en amor de Melibea, muger moça, muy generosa, de alta y serenísima sangre, sublimada en próspero estado, una sola heredera a su padre Peblerio, y de su madre Alisa muy amada («Argumento»: 109.
