Con el ténnino «Edad conflictiva» Américo Castro trata de caracterizar un periodo fundamental de la historia de España, los siglos XVI y XVII, en el que la estructura básica de la vida y de la literatura fue dirigida por «varios grupos de voluntades colectivas (gallega, leonesa, castellana, etc.), condicionado por la circunstancia interna de las tres ineludibles castas, un proceso que tendía a la armonía como daba lugar a implacables desgarros», en la idea de que lo destacable de una época, para un pueblo, es «la inseparable conciencia de su existir colectivo y de las actividades en que se afinna y mantiene aquella conciencia». Rodríguez Puértolas sigue en sus trabajos esta línea de investigación, a la que superpone las condiciones sociales con las que la teoría marxista confonna su análisis de la realidad.
