He decidido, a última hora, ofrecer este artículo al volumen homenaje que se dedica a Julio Rodríguez Puértolas porque, aunque parcialmente publicado, es el tema con el cual participé en unas jornadas sobre la II República Española celebradas en la UAM y, en cierto sentido -con los cambios introducidos en él-, representa bien la línea de investigación que he venido manteniendo y transformando durante los últimos treinta años. Julio ha sido testigo y compañero de esta trayectoria y me complace especialmente dedicarle este trabajo.
