En 1971 el escritor cubano Manuel Cofiño consiguió el premio de novela Casa de las Américas con La última mujer y el próximo combate Cofiño, nacido en 1936, había ya publicado en 1969 una colección de cuentos con el significativo título de Tiempo de cambio, y más recientemente, «Cristino Mora», primer capítulo de una novela en preparación, De dioses y miserias, de que no tengo noticia, así como un breve escrito teórico, «Acontecimiento y literatura» (Cofiño, 1972: 99-103). Escasos datos poseo acerca de la biografía de Cofiño, excepto, además de los indicados, que realizó estudios de Ciencias Publicitarias y de Filosofía y Letras y que ocupa un cargo en la sección de Divulgación del Ministerio de Justicia de su país: su nombre no suele aparecer en trabajos especializados (Caballero Bonald, 1969; Ortega, 1972); hasta el momento, lo único que conozco sobre Cofiño es un comentario de J. A. Portuondo (1972: 105-106) sobre, precisamente, La última mujer y el próximo combate. Y, sin embargo, esta novela se eleva por derecho propio hasta las cimas de la narrativa latino-americana de nuestros días.
