Un genero centenario ya en otras tradiciones lexicográficas pero de corta vida en el ámbito hispánico es el de la lexicografía monolingüe para usuarios extranjeros. Tan breve es nuestra historia que a mí mismo me cupo la misíon de poner en evidencia Ia notable laguna existente y exponer el modelo del que se suponia debía de ser ese diccionario tan ausente como demandado. Aunque se habían publicado algunas obras que sin ser propiamente diccionarios para estudiantes extranjeros se anunciaban como tales, bubo que esperar basta 1966 para encontrar el primer precedente consciente de este género lexicográfico: el Diccionario de uso del español de María Moliner. Vinieron luego otros repertorios que presentaban aspectos posi tivos, aunque de insuficiente nomenclatura unos, como e1 Diccionario básico Sapena idio mático y sintdctico, y más extensos, otros, pero necesitados de una exhaustiva revisión en sus métodos y planteamientos.
