El orden de palabras es cuestión que suscita un gran interés en la investigación lingüistica; este interés se acrecienta, si cabe, cuando se abordan las transformaciones constatables en el proceso evolutivo de una lengua originaria basta su resultado final: es el caso del latín y las lenguas romances. En efecto, este aspecto ha sido considerado por diversos estudiosos como uno de los tres cambios fundamentales que ha tenido lugar en el nivel de la organización del periodo y de la oración, ya desde la etapa latina. La evolución de este aspecto se ha realizado en una dirección que va de una libertad "no indiferente", a una fijación de posiciones por parte de los diversos constituyentes.
