Exceptuando algunas obras (véanse p. e. las publicaciones de Lipski o Perl/Schwegler 1998) existen solo escasos estudios sobre la aportacion de la población negra a las variedades regionales y locales del español de América. Este hecho llama especialmente la atención si consideramos la gran cantidad de investigaciones sobre la influencia del elemento africano en el inglés de los Estados Unidos o del Caribe. Suponemos que esta situación se debe, en primer lugar, a la inexistencia de una variedad uniforme que podríamos clasificar como "español negro" y, en segundo lugar, al hecho de que las variedades respectivas se estudiaron básicamente a partir de datos dellenguaje culto y sin considerar posibles influencias secundarias a través de variedades criollas (cf. Perl/Schwegler 1998). De esta manera no sólo hace falta un acercamiento al tema analizando unidades territoriales muy limitadas, sino también proceder con métodos dialectológicos y en base a datos empíricos.
