Tenía trece años cuando escuché por primera vez Ia palabra Euzkadi. Estábamos un grupo de es colares mirando desde lo alto de la colina adonde nos solia llevar el maestro para Ia clase de Ciencias Naturales, cuando mi compañero de pupitre, impresionado quizás por la amplitud y belleza del valle que veíamos desde alií, suspiró de manera ostensible y declaró: Nik bizia emango nikek Euzkadiren aide. Es decir: yo daría la vida por Euzkadi. Detrás de nosotros había un bosque, y una pájaro entre verde y marrón salió de él y pasó por encima de nosotros como queriendo rubricar la afirmación. Gu ez gaituk espainolak, gu euskaldunak gaituk, añadió el compañero de clase cuando el pájaro ya había vuelto a desaparecer entre los árboles. "Nosotros no somos españoles, nosotros somos vascos".
