Abstract

Tenía trece años cuando escuché por primera vez Ia palabra Euzkadi. Estábamos un grupo de es­ colares mirando desde lo alto de la colina adonde nos solia llevar el maestro para Ia clase de Ciencias Naturales, cuando mi compañero de pupitre, impresionado quizás por la amplitud y belleza del valle que veíamos desde alií, suspiró de manera ostensible y declaró: Nik bizia emango nikek Euzkadiren aide. Es decir: yo daría la vida por Euzkadi. Detrás de nosotros había un bosque, y una pájaro entre verde y marrón salió de él y pasó por encima de nosotros como queriendo rubricar la afirmación. Gu ez gaituk espainolak, gu euskaldunak gaituk, añadió el compañero de clase cuando el pájaro ya había vuelto a desaparecer entre los árboles. "Nosotros no somos españoles, nosotros somos vascos".
