Mucha tinta ha cobrado forma de escritura en torno a la figura de Don Juan. Y esto, no sólo en estudios bibliográficos y aparato critico, sino y sobre todo, en la casi infinidad de versiones liricas, novelísticas, y dramáticas que a lo largo de los cuatro últimos siglos han tenido como protagonista al "notorio" sevillano o a cualquiera de sus hijos literarios. La obra del vallisoletano José Zorrilla ha sido, sin duda, la que en España se ha convertido en la referencia más tradicional del asunto donjuanesco. En estas páginas vamos a intentar acercarnos a ella a tráves de sus lazos con los mundos del carnaval y Ia cuaresma que, a mi modo de ver, generan y articulan las dos partes que estructuran externa e internamente el drama. Para ello, primero pasearemos brevemente por los orígenes miticos del donjuanismo, que nos llevarán a entornos escatológicos que fusionan mitos y leyendas de diversos linajes: bíblico, griego, hindú, germánico...
