Con excelente intuición crítica, Angel Rama había señalado que los novelistas que él Ilamó "contestarios del poder", buscaban un "reingreso de la historia". No quiere decir esto que sean los iniciadores de esta tendencia en el siglo XX, pues los autores de Ia nueva novela latinoamericana ya habian penetrado en ese terreno con el fin de lograr una integración trasculturadora que evitara los perjuicios del provincialismo. Por otra parte, conviene recordar que esa relación entre historia y literatura es una de las características mas definidas en el trascurso de la literatura latinoamericana. En sentido estricto, esta tendencia se había iniciado con los cronistas.
