La obra de Unamuno refleja la tremenda lucha de un alma singular atormentada por los problemas esenciales del ser humano, sobre todo el de la muerte y la resurrección, vividos de un modo angustioso, pero profundamente religioso. Pues religioso y mucho era el Rector de la Universidad Salmantina, aunque hay criticos que señalan que perdió la fe “por pretender racionalizarla, por intentar probarla; y al querer reducirla a la evidencia de la ciencia natural, se sintió vencido. “Juicio riguroso y simplificador hecho desde la estricta ortodoxia católica, que se refuta con las propias palabras de Unamuno: “tengo, sí, con el afecto, con el corazón, con el sentimiento, una fuerte tendencia al cristianismo, sin atenerme a dogmas de esta o aquella confesión cristiana ... me repugnan los ortodoxos, sean católicos o protestantes -éstos suelen ser tan intransigentes como aquellos -, que niegan cristianismo a quienes no interpretan los Evangelios como ellos.
