En el día 1 de (agosto) del año 5525 de la creación salieron de España, tierra donde vivieron sus/'adres al pie de dos mil años, trescientas mil personas. - dice José Amador de los Ríos. Después de esta expulsión de los judíos de España en 1492 por los Reyes Católicos, los primeros datos sobre algunas familias de comerciantes judíos establecidos en Sarajevo, Bosnia, son del año 1566, aunque ya en el año 1551, en algunos documentos turcos, se menciona a unos comerciantes judíos. Llegaron a Bosnia, que en aquel entonces era parte del gran Imperio Turco, gracias a la actitud benevolente del sultán Bayeceto II quien invitó a los sefardíes dándose cuenta del provecho que su Imperio pudiera sacar de un colectivo de tan alta cultura y productividad, hecho al comercio y a múltiples oficios. Los sefardíes trajeron a Bosnia su idioma - el español- en el que se comunicaban en España y que, por largo tiempo, fue la única lengua de comunicación entre ellos.
