Esta reciente monografía de Carolina Fernández Cordero se propone escudriñar los últimos veinte años de la carrera de Benito Pérez Galdós, que ha dejado a la crítica desorientada por no encajar en el estilo que ya conocía y estimaba de Galdós, el realismo. La autora quiere evidenciar que el Galdós del siglo XX es digno de estimación y de estudio para aportar nuevos cauces críticos a la literatura española. Por ello la autora analiza distintos géneros literarios del escritor que van desde la novelística hasta los discursos políticos y una parte del teatro de los últimos veinte años, atisbando sus alegatos literarios. La obra se divide en II partes; la primera abarca la relación del escritor canario con su contexto histórico, político - social y matiza el perfil del intelectual del tiempo. El segundo capítulo se centra en la descripción de la nueva clase media; el tercero analiza la figura del «intelectual total» y el cuarto se ocupa de la descripción del movimiento obrero. El capítulo V trata el «Regeneracionismo radical».
