The article presents the results of research on the syntactic flexibility of French verbal idioms that consist of at least a verb and a nominal direct object. The aim of the research was to determine whether the semantic analysability and the type of the determiner in the idiomatic direct object influence the syntactic behaviour of verbal idioms. A questionnaire survey was conducted to obtain an answer to this question. It contained questions about 20 French verbal idioms and was carried out among more than 35 native speakers of French.
