The diatopic variation of contemporary French and its teaching in a Czech academic environment: The case of Québec French

The French language is an international one that is used in daily communication on the five continents. We can distinguish several diatopic varieties of the French language, distributed in different geographical areas of the world. We can discern the French from France, Québec, Switzerland, Belgium and other areas. Our article focuses on teaching of the French language used in Québec at universities in the Czech Republic. The main objective of our paper is to examine the situation at Czech universities that offer French language and literature studies or translation and see how the diatopic variation is integrated in courses on civilization, literature, lexicology or morphosyntax or other disciplines. We also want to propose some ways to integrate this diatopic variation into the teaching of terminology and specialized translation. In this context, we also propose to highlight the morphological, syntactic and lexical specificities of Québec French that should be emphasized in university courses. Furthermore, we would like to reveal how diatopic variation is manifested in the terminology of certain special fields, particularly in legal terminology.
