Abstract

The purpose of the experiment was to study the influence of ergotamine on yeasts growth and the possibility of ergotamine removal from the growth medium. Cultivations of two yeast strains Pichia anomala ZIM 83 and P. anomala ZIM 419, isolated from the ergot alkaloid wastewater and strain Torulaspora pretoriensis ZIM 3 were performed in shake flasks. Cultivations in the growth medium with ergotamine tartrate indicated that ergotamine does not have an inhibitory effect on the yeasts growth. The concentration of ergotamine in the media decreased in one parallel of yeast isolates cultivation. The yeast strain Pichia anomala ZIM 419 was further cultivated in 25 l stirred bioreactor. The concentration of ergotamine in the growth medium decreased for 30 % in 30 hours. Results showed the possibility of ergotamine biodegradation and their biosorption on the yeast biomass.
