Abstract

This article examines some of the most salient phenomena marking contemporary Islamic revival among the Hui, a Chinese ethno-religious minority, such as reforms of religious instruction, a growing Hui presence in the international centres of Islamic learning, a flourishing religious publishing and a continous increase in the numbers of pilgrims to Mecca. These developments are placed in the context of historical development of Islam in China, from the advent of first Muslims in the 7th century up until today. The author argues that the present-day revival should largely be seen as a continuation of the Islamic reformist efforts of the Republican era, which were concurrent with the projects of Chinese modernization and nation-building, but were sharply interrupted by the various political campaigns of the first few decades of the People's Republic of China.
