Abstract

The article discusses the historical process of European music entry into China and its reception in Chinese society. This process which started to evolve with the arrival of the first Jesuit missionaries in the imperial court in 17th century still goes on at present and could be roughly divided into three periods. The main characteristic of this process is mostly the change from passive reception of European music to active creation and (mis)use of received musical system.
