Josip Pipenbacher, born in 1869, went to gymnasium in Maribor and then in Ljubljana, where he graduated; he went on to study classical philology in Vienna. In 1895, on receiving his PhD, he became the second Slovenian doctor of classical philology (after Fran Detela). After passing the state teacher’s exam, he taught at the II. State Gymnasium in Ljubljana, at the Gymnasium in Novo mesto, and then again at the II. State Gymnasium in Ljubljana, where he also served as director from 1921 until his retirement in 1928. After the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Ljubljana was founded, he held Latin proseminars and Latin courses there as a part-time teacher between 1920 and 1939.
