Abstract

The article discusses the play Medea (Medeja) by the Slovene poet Dane Zajc. Its focus is on character analysis, since this might provide additional insights into Euripides’ tragedy for the high-school students preparing to take the final examination (matura) in Latin. The complex structure of Zajc’s play corresponds to the author’s concept of time, which is not linear but spirals in an “eternal returning without return”, a punishment worse than death for the characters.
