Abstract

The phenomenon called tacitism estab lished Tacitus' authority in the realm of politics strongly influenced by The Prince of Machiavelli. Because of the common caracteristics between the two protago nists (Cesare Borgia and Tiberius) the Counter-Reformation, having a particu lar dislike for Machiavelli, substituted him with Tacitus when developing its concept of the Reason of State.
