Potem ko je otrok obvladal branje in pisanje, so na vrsti učitelji slovstva (grammatici). Vseeno je, ali gre za latinske ali grške, čeprav se mi zdi bolje, da je prvi učitelj grščine. 2. Oba delata po enaki metodi. Čeprav se da ta predmet zelo na kratko razdeliti na dva dela, namreč na sposobnost pravilnega govorjenja in razlago pesnikov, je v njem več, kakor je videti od zunaj. 3. Kajti pravopis je povezan z govorjenjem, poleg tegaje branje brez napak predpogoj za razlago besedila, vse skupaj je povezano s sposobnostjo presojanja. V njej so bili stari slovničarjitako strogi, da si niso dovoljevali samo z nekakšno cenzorsko črtico zaznamovati verze ter knjige, ki so se zdele nepristne, izganjati iz družine kot nekakšne podtaknjence, ampak so celo nekatere pisce uvrstili v zaporedje zglednih, medtem ko drugih sploh niso upoštevali.
