Desiderius Erasmus: The Apotheosis of That Incomparable Worthy, Johann Reuchlin: De incomparabili heroe loanne Reuchlino in divorum numerum relato

Leta 1510 so Johannesa Reuchlina, profesorja prava v Pforzheimu, ki je bil izkušen v cesarskih političnih zadevah in je slovel kot izjemen humanist in hebraist, prosili, naj poda mnenje o judovskih knjigah. Dve leti pred tem je Johannes Pfefferkorn, judovski spreobrnjenec v krščanstvo, svoje bivše soverce namreč obtožil posedovanja knjig, ki blatijo krščanstvo, in prepričal cesarja, naj ukaže zaplembo in pregled vseh knjig v lasti judov, da se odkrijejo morebitne krivoverske in protikrščanske prvine. Reuchlin je v svojem slavnem odgovoru branil zakonske pravice judov v cesarstvu in trdil, da judovske literature ni mogoče kar v celoti obravnavati kot protikrščanske. Po objavi tega odgovora je bil leta 1511 obtožen herezije, začela pa se je vsesplošna razprava o judovski literaturi, krščanski hebraistiki ter odnosu med humanističnimi filološkimi prizadevanji in krščansko teologijo. Reuchlin je nekaj let zelo uspešno zavračal obtožbe, si pridobil veliko privržencev po vsej Evropi in še naprej preučeval judovsko literaturo (leta 1517 je objavil delo De arte Cabbalistica). Papež je njegova dela leta 1520 obsodil, a je Reuchlin lahko nadaljeval z delom profesorja v Tübingenu in umrl (naravne smrti) v Stuttgartu leta 1522. Erazem je bil Reuchlinov velik občudovalec in v t. i. Reuchlinovi aferi se je postavil na njegovo stran, kakor priča tudi naslednji dialog. Kljub temu pa je bila Erazmova podpora nekoliko mlačna, saj je hotel Erazem, kot je zanj značilno, ostati čim bolj ob strani in se ni želel nedvoumno opredeliti.Downloads
