Komedija Paulus je prva ohranjena humanistična komedija. Izraz zaznamuje dramska besedila, ki so začela nastajati v začetku 14. stoletja, njihova produkcija pa je vrhunec dosegla sredi 15. stoletja. Napisana so v latinščini, realistično slikajo dogodke iz vsakdanjosti in obravnavajo (pretežno slabe) moralne vrednote v sodobnosti. Snov zajemajo iz sočasnega meščanskega, pogosto univerzitetnega in študentskega okolja, od koder so najpogosteje izhajali tudi avtorji in bralstvo. Kot zgled še vedno služijo motivi klasične, predvsem rimske komedije, vendar pa so ti motivi zgolj osnova, ki jo povezuje povsem izvirno tkivo, vezano na sodoben kontekst. Ta je pogosto bliže novelistični in satirični tradiciji, zaplet in razplet pa izražata jasen moralistični nauk.
