Language Change and Honorification in Spanish
The Case of Usía and Vuecencia

The aim of this paper is to analyse the origin and the peculiar evolution of two formulae of treatment: usía and vuecencia, from the honorific syntagmas vuestra señoría ‘your lordship’ and vuestra excelencia ‘your excellence’, respectively, both documented for the first time in the Spanish spoken in the Renaissance. Through a relatively broad textual corpus (XV-XIX centuries) the author tries to determine the morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic reasons that led, first, to its lexicalization and, later, its grammaticalization.
