The objective of this study is to present and describe part of the verb complement systems in Spanish and Croatian in order to gain an insight into possible solutions for their distribution. We start with the traditional categorisation of verb complements and then focus on the argument-adjunct distinction, in order to identify similarities and differences between two languages in this area. We focus on several difficulties, such as the existence of adverbial arguments (Rojo 1990; Palić 2011; Belaj/Tanacković Faletar 2017), the relationship between the indirect object and the so-called marginal datives (Porto Dapena 1997; Gutiérrez Ordóñez 1999; Palić 2010), and complements with the semantic role of instrument in Croatian (Belaj/Tanacković Faletar 2017; Brač 2018).
