Although social media already surpass many other media in terms of usage volume, relatively few studies have so far addressed their impact on the use of phraseological units. This paper is based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the frequency and functional characteristics of phraseological units in social media, with selected usage patterns in contemporary corpus material being interpreted. The corpus analysis was designed as a comparison of the relative or normalized frequencies in two corpora: the social media corpus Janes and the reference corpus of Slovene Gigafida. The analysis was complemented by an interpretation of selected examples from both corpora as well as from current social media content, particularly Facebook. The results indicate a relatively more frequent use of phrasemes in social media and their pronounced contextual adaptability, reflected in numerous creative modifications. Phraseology in social media thus represents a dynamic and multifunctional expressive level that significantly shapes digital public discourse.
