L’auteur discute d’abord les critères qui l’ont guidé dans le choix des textes pour l’édition sur CD-Rom qu’il a publiée avec Barbara Wolf de « Textes privés des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles » : origine sociale modeste des auteurs ; faible degré de scolarisation ; caractère privé des textes. Il discute ensuite les éventuelles conséquences linguistiques (intralinguistiques ou univer- selles) de cette ‘privauté’. Parmi les phénomènes s’écartant de la norme linguistique du temps, il essaie de distinguer les traits idiosyncratiques d’un auteur des éventuels traits com- muns aux textes d’auteurs peu lettrés (‘semicolti’) dans le domaine de l’orthographe, de la syntaxe (y compris la cohésion textuelle), et du lexique. Ce recueil de textes devrait donner une base matérielle aux futures recherches sur la diachronie du français non-standard, le français des peu lettrés dans sa variabilité régionale, sociale et situationnelle mais aussi aux discussions sur le caractère universel ou non de certains des phénomènes discutés.
