Oggigiomo al centro degli studi linguistici non è più il sistema astratto bensì il linguaggio in società e nei vari contatti di popoli, lingue, culture, con le differenze non soltanto «orizzontali» (areali, geografiche), ma anche «verticali» (sociali) e diafasiche, diamesiche ecc. Conseguenza di contatti linguistici sono il bilinguismo e la diglossia (anche coesistenti), fenomeni dovuti a quello che si designa con il termine inglese intercourse. Sono tutti aspetti della vita del linguaggio che si danno in ogni società e ad ogni epoca; eppure, come è risaputo, sono stati più o meno trascurati dalle dottrine linguistiche che studiavano ii linguaggio in vitro, come sistema idealizzato e astratto: neogrammatici, strutturalisti, generativisti.
