Cette vaste étude de 633 pages (dont 555 sont destinées au texte proprement dit, 83 aux donnees bibliographiques, précieuses surtout pour les sources primaires, et 12 aux index respectifs des noms et des choses), la thèse de doctorat d'un disciple des professeurs Swiggers et Melis; publiee dans une collection et par une maison d' édition · prestigieuses, inspire confiance au lecteur, de prime abord, non pas grâce au prestige extérieur, mais par ses évidentes clarté et lisibilité ainsi que par son riche contenu documentaire. C' est un fait indéniable, egalement, que le courant naturaliste en linguistique française, comprenant une période de 55 ans à cheval sur les deux siècles, n'a jamais été étudié d'une manière aussi minutieuse et exhaustive: la contribution de Piet Desmet représente sans aucun doute, un apport courageux et précieux pour l'historiographie de la linguistique.
