Connaissant de façon approfondie le slovenè, M. Tesnière a admiré, en linguiste, le remarquable développement du slovene litteraire." (André Vaillant, in: Revue des études slaves, 1931, S. 114).
Tesnière kam 1920 nach Ljubljana, um dort als Lektor im Rang eines Professors Französisch zu lehren. Seiner Initiative verdankt das Institut Français in Ljubljana seine Existenz. Tesnière war bis 1924 sein administrativer Leiter, Oton Župančič wurde zum Präsident des Instituts gewählt. Damit kam Tesnière mit dem "Emeuerer des slowenischen Verses", wie er Župančič nannte, in einen engeren Kontakt. Doch gait Tesnières Interesse · keineswegs nur ihm. Ende der zwanziger Jahre war Tesnière der erste, der an einer französischen Universität die slowenische Literatur von Trubar über Preseren bis Župančič lehrte. Anton Ocvirk hat den jungen Maître de conférence 1933 in Straßburg besucht und eine erstaunliche Beschreibung seiner reichhaltigen Sammlung slowenischer Literatur gegeben, - nach Tesnière selbst damals die wohl großte slowenische Bibliothek in Frankreich.
