In den Noctes atticae von Aulus Gellius (XI, 12) finden wir die oft zitierte Nach richt, daß Chrysippus - einer der profiliertesten Vertreter der stoischen Sprachtheo rie - alle Wörter für zwei- oder mehrdeutig hielt: «Chrysippus ait omne verbum am biguum natura esse, quoniam ex eodem duo vel plura accipi possunt». Es fragt sich allerdings, in welchem Sinne dieser apodiktisch geäusserte Gedanke konkret zu fas sen sei und inwieweit er mit dem, was wir über die stoische Sprachlehre wissen, in Einklang gebracht werden kann. Meine Absicht ist eben zu beweisen, daß jene Aussa ge mit den Grundsätzen der Stoa durchaus vereinbar ist und darüber hinaus einen auch für die modeme Semantik interessanten Ansatz enthält.
