I testi raccolti dal de Courtenay, finora inediti, interessano I'etnologo e attirano illinguista, non fosse che peril nome illustre dell'autore. La linguistica teorica rico nosce allinguista polacco una visione sostanzialmente conforme a quello che dal Saussure in poi sarà il concetto di fonema: Baudouin parlava di equivalente psichico del suono acustico e postulava come psicofonetica Ia scienza che doveva occuparsi del fonema. E' giusto vedere nel polacco un precursore di alcune idee fondamentali del Cours de linguistique générale. Sia detto anche, che al Saussure Io legava una re ciproca stima ben visibile nella seppur scarsa corrispondenza tra i due.
