Distinzione delle frasi avversative (È bella però è antipatica) dalle sostitutive (Non è bella bensì [ è ] brutta). Categorie sintattiche e semantiche in queste frasi. Possibilità dell'uso di però (avversativo) e bensì (sostitutivo). La congiunzione ma è sinonima di ambedue, ma col primo termine negato può essere ambigua (Laura non è bella ma è simpatica). Distintività del Secondo ausiliare in tali contesti: con esso la frase è avversativa, senza esso diventa sostitutiva. L' ellissi del Secondo ausiliare è impossibile anche con però (come nel scr. con ali), e 1' autore lo spiega con la topicalizzazione: nel rapporto sostitutivo (bensì) sono topicalizzati i due termini di cui l'uno si elimina e sostituisce con l' altro, mentre nel rapporto avversativo (però) è topicalizzato il verbo del secondo termine, perché esso dice che il secondo termine, sebbene in contrasto col primo, continua ad esistere.
