Iz navedene obravnave jezikovnega gradiva sledi, da je pisatelj I. Tavčar v svojih delih upošteval pravila knjižne norme. če že ne sam, so pri tem sodelovali uredniki in korektorji literarnih časopisov. Normo je sprejemal kot nujno dejstvo, vendar se vsem pravilom, ki so usmerjala v arhaizacijo jezika, ni v celoti podrejal. Slovanske izposojenke je izkoriščal zelo funkcionalllo. Znal je izrabiti tudi nežive člene jezikovnega sistema, jih oživljati in tvorno razvijati. Spretno je prepletal vse dubletne možnosti na leksikalni in sintaktični jezikovni ravni. Pri izbiri možnosti ga je vodila funkcionalnost, zato imajo v njegovih stavkih tako arhaični kot sodobni pojavi lahko stilistično vrednost. Tavčarjeva dela od začetnih objav v sedemdesetih letih do konca 19. stoletja izpričujejo zavidljiv jezikovni razvoj. Kljub tesnobi norme do devetdesetih let se v njej sproščeno giblje in potiska jezikovni razvoj naprej. Ko pride do sodobnejših premikov tudi pri »pravilih« knjižnega jezika in iz slovnic izginejo arhaična pretiravanja, se Tavčarju jezik razrase v pokoren instrument.
