Pred petnaest godina talijanski, slavist Giovani Maver svestrano je proučio hrvatskosrpski termin kanata i ustanovio da je ta riječ, dotada »nepoznata postanja«, posuđenica iz predmletačkog romanskog sloja koji, kratkoće radi, zovemo dalmatskim. Različite nijanse njena značenja, npr. »završetak berbe grožđa« (Rab, Beli na Cresu), "završetak berbe", »zadnji dan« (Jelsa), »Završna svečanost nakon nekog većeg posla« (O. Susak), »gozba nakon berbe«, "dovršenje kuće« (o. Kaprije), »dovršenje kuće grožđa« (Hvar) i sitne akcenatske razlike ukazuju da se radi uvijek o istom leksemu, a geografska rasprostranjenost siguran je indicij, uz ostale momente, da se radi o posuđenici iz dalmatskog jezika, i to iz jednog ili više njegovih govora što su se u ranom srednjem vijeku (a u Krku i mnogo kasnije) govorili u poznatim romanskim oazama od Krka da Splita. Južnije, kanda ta riječ nije bila u upotrebi jer nisu poznati njeni hrvatskosrpski refleksi (Maver je za Vis, Korčulu i šipan siguran da tamo refleksa te riječi danas nema).
