Die Vokale der slowenischen Sprache haben, wie bekannt, drei distin'ktive Merkmale: die Qualität, die Quantität und den Akzent. Alle drei kommen in Betracht bei der Unterscheidung von Bedeutungen, die Qualität z. B. in róka »die Hand«:· róka »der Frist«, die Quantität in káj »was«: kàj »etwas«, der Akzent in vrát »der Türe« (gen. plur.): vrât »der Hais«; sie enscheinen also in Oppsitionen. Die Qualitäts- und Quantitätsoppositionen sind, was die slowenischen Dialekte betrifft, schon ziemlich genau untersucht worden und sind auch in der Schriftsprache wenigstens theoretisch fixiert. Die Akzents-, oder wie man sie gewöhnlich nennt, die Intontionsoppositionen sind im Vergleich dazu nur sehr spärlich beschrieben.
